We sponsored Team Essence, a five-man crew who set out to row across the Atlantic. We’re proud to announce that after 50 days at sea and over 4,000 miles, they’ve completed the challenge while breaking two world records!

More people have ventured into outer space, or climbed Mount Everest, than completed this epic challenge: rowing non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, unassisted, from mainland Europe to mainland South America.

The five men of Team Essence were at sea for a total of 50 days, rowing their way into the World Record books in a dramatic, life-threatening journey aimed at raising money for the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children).

Fighting hypothermia, sleep deprivation, injury, infection and dehydration, the team overcame these challenges alone without a support boat, life raft or backup engine. Over the course of their crossing, they endured and survived the most extreme conditions imaginable aboard a tiny carbon fibre rowboat: capsizing three times, facing 20 foot waves, 50 mile an hour winds, punishingly frigid and intensely hot temperatures. Remarkably, before embarking on this challenge, none of the men had any previous rowing experience.

Finally making landfall at 1.26am on Tuesday 29th March on the Northeastern Peninsula of Venezuela, the team concluded their 4,237 mile journey of continuous 24 hour-a-day rowing: a world’s first.

The challenge has already raised over £100,000 of donations for the NSPCC – a figure which the boys hope to double in the coming weeks. If you’d like to help make this possible, you can text TERB52 to 70070 to donate £5 or you can visit their fundraising page.
