Webb deVlam is a keen supporter of developing new talent. One of the ways we do this is with our annual student placement opportunity. A talented student will be selected and given invaluable work experience at our London office.

Our Senior Designer Dale Nicholls is a graduate of Nottingham Trent University, one of the top design universities in the UK, producing some of the most employable design graduates.

Recently, Dale returned to his alumni and with the design course lecturer, co-wrote this year’s brief in conjunction with global giant Unilever. The project required students to review and practically deliver concepts for the premiumisation of the 100ml Brut aftershave range.

Students were given the consumer profile of today’s multi-faceted, modern ‘Menaissance’ man. Our latest thoughts and trends on male marketing from our Head of Strategy, Nikki Austen, found that this male consumer has become largely unable to identify with macho stereotypes that feel out-dated and unrealistic. The students were tasked with creating innovative concepts for this male consumer who wants authentic brands and products rather than those based on superficial, unattainable aspirations.

As the main judge, Dale looked for submissions that maintained the brand heritage of the product, incorporating appropriate premium materials into concepts that considered the needs of this target consumer.

From 80 Second Year students who took part in the challenge, Dale has whittled the applications down to just five, who are now interviewing for the opportunity – good luck guys!
